Jennifer Barringer is the fastest miler Florida
has ever seen, the best girls distance runner
Central Florida has ever produced.
Tuesday night, she crossed the finish line of her high school career at Oviedo as the Orlando Sentinel's
girls athlete of the year for 2004-05.
Barringer and Tavares' three-sport star Jermaine Taylor won top prizes at the Varsity Sports Awards
Banquet, hosted Tuesday by the Sentinel at the Citrus Bowl.
Taylor was named boys athlete of the year. He helped Tavares record its first unbeaten football
regular season since 1946, and then earned All-Central Florida honors in basketball and track.
Barringer won a third consecutive state cross country championship in the fall, then collected the
fourth and fifth track titles of her career in the spring. She won both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter
races at the Class 4A state meet.
Lake Mary won the Varsity Cup, the all-sports championship for schools in the Sentinel's coverage area.
Lake Mary also won the Florida High School Athletic Association's Class 6A all-sports title.
To determine the Varsity Cup winner, programs were first credited for finishes in the final Super 6
and second 6 rankings, compiled weekly by Sentinel sports writers for FHSAA-sanctioned sports.
First place in a final Super 6 was worth 70 points; second place, 50; third, 40; fourth, 30; fifth, 20;
sixth, 15; seventh 10; eighth, 9; ninth, 8; 10th, 6; 11th, 4; and 12th, 2.
We then factored in each school's point total in the FHSAA formula, in which points are awarded for
finishes among the top 32 in each classification. The FHSAA awards 50 points for a state championship
team, 47 for a runner-up, 43 for a regional title and down to one point for finishing 32nd.
